WAUSAU, Wis. — After 40 scoreless periods, Friday’s NA3HL showdown between the Wisconsin
Woodsmen and Wausau Cyclones turned into a four-goal, third-period shootout.
Unfortunately, the Woodsmen’s six-shooter came up firing blanks, while the Cyclones’ found
their mark — over, and over, and over again.
Wausau erupted for four third-period goals — including two in the first 2:36 of the final frame
— as the Cyclones handed the Woodsmen a 4-0 setback at Marathon Park.
Wisconsin’s offense appeared to be shifted in high gear from the opening faceoff, peppering
the Wausau goal with 14 first-period shots, but, thanks to the effort of Cyclone goalie Brady
Faille, went into the intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
Lleyton Jaschke did his part to keep the game scoreless after two periods, turning aside all 13
Cyclone second-period shots — leaving both teams with a goose egg on the scoreboard heading
into the game’s final 20 minutes.
Elijah Von Gunten finally broke through for the Cyclones 23 seconds into the third period, and
Brayden Erst pushed that lead to 2-0 with his first of the season less than two minutes later.
Jackson Schroeder and Elji Hofmann also found the back of the net in the final 11:40 of the
period to round out the scoring.
Jaschke finished with 29 saves between the pipes for the Woodsmen, while Faille kicked out all
33 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.
Wisconsin (2-10-1-0) is back in action Saturday night, as the Woodsmen return home to the
Tomah Ice Center for a 7:15 p.m. NA3HL matchup against the Rochester Grizzlies.
