WAUSAU, Wis. — Through two periods Friday evening, the Wisconsin Woodsmen matched the
Wausau Cyclones goal-for-goal in the teams’ NA3HL showdown at Marathon Park Arena.
Unfortunately for the Woodsmen, a hockey game is three periods long — and the decisive
period belonged to the Cyclones.
Wausau scored the game’s first three goals — including both first-period tallies — as the
Cyclones dealt the Woodsmen a 4-2 setback in a battle for second place in the Central Division
standings.
Jake Garrow and Elji Hofmann scored 18 seconds apart late in the first period to give Wausau a
2-0 lead after the game’s opening 20 minutes.
Landon Bechtolt pushed the Wausau lead to 3-0 with a goal at 5:27 of the middle period,
before Cole Schreiber netted his first goal as a Woodsmen with 4:34 in the frame to cut the
deficit to 3-1 heading into the third.
Hugh Deinema got Wisconsin within one, 3-2, with his team-leading 21 st goal of the year at
13:25, but that would be as close as the Woodsmen would get, as Connor Dvorak netted an
empty-netter with 12 seconds on the clock to seal the Cyclones’ victory.
Steven Kelley was busy between the pipes for the Woodsmen, kicking out 41 of the Cyclones’
44 shots on goal, while Wausau goalie Tanner Bonjernoor finished with 34 saves.
The same two teams will go at it again Saturday evening, returning to Marathon Park Arena for
the 7:10 rematch.
