AFFTON, Mo. – The second period continued to be the Achilles heel for the Wisconsin Woodsmen Saturday evening.
But thanks to Nolan Mix’s second goal of the game with 11 seconds remaining in regulation, allowing two second-period wasn’t the Woodsmen’s undoing.
It was the goal the St. Louis Jr. Blues scored four minutes into overtime that was.
The Jr. Blues’ Eric Denny scored at 4:39 of overtime to lift St. Louis to a 3-2 NA3HL victory at the Affton Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period, St. Louis snatched the momentum, getting back-to-back goals from Lonnie Land to give the Jr. Blues a 2-0 second-period advantage.
Mix cut the Woodsmen deficit to one, 2-1, before the second intermission and knotted the contest with his second of the night late in the third period – sending the game into OT.
And setting up Denny’s overtime heroics.
Lleyton Jaschke was busy between the pipes for Wisconsin, finishing with 42 saves, while St. Louis goalie Travis Visvadra stopped 20 of the Woodsmen’s 22 shots on goal.
The Woodsmen will get another shot at the Jr. Blues next weekend, as the two teams head to the Tomas Ice Center for back-to-back 7:15 p.m. games both Friday and Saturday.
