TOMAH, Wis. — On paper, Friday’s NA3HL showdown between the Wisconsin Woodsmen and
the West Bend Power “should” have been a one-sided affair.
The Woodsmen, however, had other ideas.
The Power took the ice Friday night riding a 13-game winning streak, not to mention boasting a
stranglehold on the top spot in the NA3HL Central Division standings, while the host Wisconsin
Woodsmen were mired in fifth place in the six-team Central Division and struggling to find their
identity.
That, however, was how the matchup shaped up on paper.
On the ice, the Woodsmen proved every bit as good as the Power — thanks to Nolan Mix, who
scored less than a minute into overtime, lifting the Woodsmen to a 3-2 victory over the league-
leaders at the Tomah Ice Center.
The Woodsmen — who have not played five straight games decided by two goals or less — got
on the board first, as James Pautsch netted his first goal as a Woodsmen with 1:17 remaining in
the opening period to give Wisconsin a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
West Bend answered with back-to-back goals by Jace Fitzgerald and Blake Kohnen before the
second period was 10 minutes old to give West Bend a 2-1 lead. Maxim Lazo found the back of
the net for the 12th time this season with 2:09 to play to knot the game at 2-2 with 20 minutes
remaining in regulation.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the third period, setting up Mix’s game-winner
with 4:17 to play in the extra session.
Ty Paulios picked up a pair of assists for the Woodsmen, while Lleyton Jaschke finished with 27
saves between the pipes.
The Woodsmen (8-14-2-1 overall) get another shot at the Power on Saturday, when the two
teams head to the Kettle Moraine Ice Center in Kettle Moraine, Wis., for the 7:30 p.m. rematch.
