MIDWEEK PREVIEW: WOODSMEN vs. CYCLONES

The Wisconsin Woodsmen are back on the road for a pair of NA3HL games this weekend, heading to Marathon Park Arena in Wausau, Wis., for back-to-back games against the Wausau Cyclones. The two teams will drop the puck at 7:10 p.m. on Friday, with another 7:10 p.m. matchup the following evening.

WOODSMEN SCOUTING REPORT:

  • FOR THE RECORD: The Woodsmen head into their weekend games against the Wausau Cyclones sporting a 12-20-2-1 record, good for 27 points and a fifth-place showing in the NA3HL Central Division standings. … Wisconsin closed out the 2024-25 season with a 24-16-6-3 record, good for fifth place in the NA3HL Central Division standings.
  • LAST TIME OUT: The Woodsmen came up short in both of its NA3HL road games last weekend, falling to the Rochester Grizzlies 10-4 last Friday in Rochester, Minn., before dropping a 5-2 decision to the Wausau Cyclones in Wausau, Wis., the following evening.
  • ROAD WARRIORS: The Woodsmen are in the midst of playing five of six games on the road — the lone exception, a Jan. 10 matchup against the Rochester Grizzlies. Wisconsin does not return home until Jan. 30-31, when they kick off a four-game homestand with a pair of games against the Peoria Mustangs. … Wisconsin has collected seven of its 12 wins this season on its home ice, going 7-10-0-1 at the Tomah Ice Center, while owning a 5-10-2-0 mark on the road this year. … The Woodsmen finished 11-8-3-3 at the Tomah Ice Center a year ago, while going 11-8-3-3 on the road.
  • STREAKING: Thanks to their 13-0 win over the Pelham Prowlers, 5-1 victory vs. the Maine Nordiques, and a 7-0 triumph against the Bozeman Nordiques, the Woodsmen have now put together three consecutive wins three times this season. … The Woodsmen’s two losses last weekend to the Rochester Grizzlies and Wausau Cyclones pushed their current losing streak to four. … With their 3-2 win over the Peoria Mustangs on Nov. 7, the Woodsmen put an end to a franchise-high nine-game losing streak.
  • WHITE-KNUCKLE RIDE: The Woodsmen’s 3-2 overtime win over the West Bend Power on Dec. 5 was the ninth game this season decided by one goal. Wisconsin has now played 29 games over the last two seasons that have been decided by one goal — including 16 that went into overtime and four decided in a shootout. … Wisconsin’s 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Moose on Nov. 15 was their first game this season decided by a shootout.
  • TURNING UP THE HEAT: The Woodsmen erupted for a season-high 13 goals in routing the Pelham Power on Dec. 14. The 13 goals were one shy of the single-game franchise record of 14, set in a 14-0 whitewashing of the Minnesota Loons on Jan. 26, 2024. 
  • TURNING UP THE HEAT II: Wisconsin peppered the Peoria Mustangs’ net with 64 shots in its 9-1 win over the Mustangs on Nov. 8. The 64 shots on goal were a season-high, and the most since recording 67 shots against Peoria on Oct. 19, 2024.
  • TURNING UP THE HEAT III: The Woodsmen have scored six or more goals in a game seven times this season, and have netted 6+ goals in a game 17 times over the last two seasons.
  • COMING UP EMPTY: The Woodsmen’s 4-0 loss to the Wausau Cyclones on Oct. 24 marked the first time this season they were held without a goal. The last time Wisconsin, which has scored 80 goals in 26 games, had been shut out came in a 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Moose on Dec. 6, 2024.
  • LIGHTING THE LAMP: Maxim Lazo and Ty Paulios head into the weekend leading the Woodsmen in goals with 16, two more than Nolan Mix. Tyler Osborne and Parker Holloway are the only other Wisconsin players to reach double figures in goals, sitting with 10 each, while Josh Kauppinen is two goals shy of reaching the 10-goal plateau.
  • SPREADING THE WEALTH:The Woodsmen — whose seven combined goals in its season-opening split against the Rochester Grizzlies on Sept. 12-13 came from seven different players — have had 19 players light the lamp this season.
  • FRANCHISE BEST: Lazo’s four goals in Wisconsin’s 6-4 win over the West Bend Power on Oct. 3 matched his single-game career high, and equaled the franchise single-game record. … Lazo has now scored four goals in a game twice, having also achieved the feat against the Mason City Toros last season. … Nolan Mix originally had set the program record, scoring four goals against the Minnesota Loons on Jan. 26, 2024.
  • TOSSING THE HAT: Paulios’s hat trick against the Rochester Grizzlies on Nov. 22 was his second of the season, having also netted three goals against the Peoria Mustangs on Nov. 7. … Wisconsin has now had a player record three or more goals in a game eight times over the last two seasons. 
  • LENDING A HELPING HAND: Mix is the team-leader in assists with 22. He is one of nine Woodsmen who have eclipsed the 10-assist mark. Paulios is second to Mix with 19 helpers, followed by Lazo with 18, Brandon Slasor and Kauppinen with 16, Osborne and Brodie Mich with 15 each, Bryce Bechen with 12, and Holloway with 10. … Osborne picked up four assists in the Woodsmen’s 7-0 win over the Bozeman Icedogs on Dec. 16, one shy of the single-game franchise record of five, set by Hunter Nelson against the Minnesota Loons on Jan. 26, 2024.
  • POINT PRODUCERS: Wisconsin boasts seven players who have accumulated 20 or more points this season, led by Mix (14 G, 22 A) with 36, Paulios (16 G, 19 A) with 35, and Lazo (16 G, 18 A) with 34. Osborne (10 G, 15 A, 25 Pts), Kauppinen (8 G, 16 A, 24 Pts), Slasor (6 G, 16 A, 22 Pts), and Holloway (10 G, 10 A, 20 Pts) have also recorded 20+ points, with Mich (4 G, 15 A, 19 Pts) just one point shy of the 20-point mark.. 
  • BETWEEN THE PIPES: Lleyton Jaschke has appeared in 24 of the Woodsmen’s 36 games in goal (1267:00), compiling a 4.45 goals-against-average and an .880 save percentage. … Jaschke has stopped a team-leading 784 shots. … Alex Rivolta — who picked up his first and second shutouts as a Woodsmen with a six-save effort against the Pelham Prowlers on Dec. 14 and a 27-save showing against the Bozeman Icedogs two days later — boasts a 2.58 GAA and .916 save percentage in 10 appearances (464:00), while Logan Blahnik has played in five games (217:00), boating a 5.25 GAA and .850 save % and Aidan Vanderweele owns a 7.60 GAA and .818 save % in three appearances (142:00). … Jaschke closed out the 2024-25 season recording 511 saves in 21 appearances, second to Steven Kelley’s team-leading 738 saves in 25 appearances.
  • PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Woodsmen’s games against the Pelham Prowlers, Maine Nordiques, and Bozeman Icedogs at the NA3HL Showcase on Dec. 14-16 were the first meetings in program history.

CYCLONES SCOUTING REPORT

  • FOR THE RECORD: The Cyclones enter their weekend series against the Wisconsin Woodsmen owning an 19-13-1-0 record, leaving them sitting tied for third in the Central Division standings with 39 points.
  • LAST TIME OUT: Wausau split its two games last weekend, falling to league-leading West Bend Power 3-1 in Kettle Moraine, Wis., last Friday, before rebounding with a 5-2 win over the Wisconsin Woodsmen the following evening in Wausau, Wis.
  • HOME SWEET HOME: After playing eight of their last 10 games on the road, the Cyclones game against the Wisconsin Woodsmen last Saturday was the first of three straight home games. … Wausau sports a 6-5-0-0 record on its home ice, while going 12-7-1-0 away from Marathon Park.
  • LIGHTING THE LAMP: Jackson Schroeder leads the team in goals with 20. He is one of four Cyclones who have reached double figures in goals this season, being joined by Brady Knutsen (15), Eljl Hofmann (13), and Elijah Gunten (12). Joel Anderson and Jackson Maddock are just two goals shy of joining the quartet in the double-figure goals club. 
  • LENDING A HELPING HAND: Schroeder has collected a team-best 26 assists, with Hofmann and Anderson clipping at his heels with 23 and 22 helpers, respectively. Knutsen is fourth on the squad with 19 assists, while Maksim Salienko has also recorded 10+ assists, sitting fifth with 15.
  • POINT PRODUCERS: Schroeder is easily atop the team’s points race with 45 points, thanks to his 19 goals and 26 assists. Hofmann (13 G, 23 A, 36 Pts), Knutsen (15 G, 19 A, 34 Pts), and Anderson (8 G, 22 A, 30 Pts) have also eclipsed the 30-point mark, while Gunten (12 G, 9 A, 21 Pts), Salienko (4 G, 15 A, 19 Pts), and Jackson Maddock (8 G, 9 A, 17 Pts) are closing in on the 20-point plateau.
  • BETWEEN THE PIPES: The Cyclones have had three different goalies see time between the pipes this season, led by Brady Falle and Tanner Bonjernoor. Falle has appeared in a team-high 17 games (921:00), compiling a 2.47 goals-against-average and .917 save percentage, while Bonjernoor has played in 14 games (730:00), posting a 3.53 GAA and .895 save %. Brody Kunst has also seen plenty of work in goal for Wausau, playing in seven games (318:00) and owns a 2.64 GAA and .924 save %. … Falle has made a team-leading 456 saves, followed by Bonjernoor (411) and Kunst (184).
