TOMAH, Wis. — After surrendering seven goals, including six in the final two periods — and the
game-winner with only seconds remaining in regulation — the Wisconsin Woodsmen got a little
more defensive in their NA3HL rematch with the Wausau Cyclones Saturday evening, limiting
the visitors to just four goals.
Which proved to be two too many.
For the second game in a row, the Cyclones — 7-6, come-from-behind winners on Friday
evening — used a late rally to beat Wisconsin, this time scoring two goals in the game’s final
four minutes, breaking a 2-2 tie and leading Wausau to a 4-2 win and a weekend sweep of the
Woodsmen at the Tomah Ice Center.
After a scoreless first period, the Cyclones grabbed a 2-0 lead on second-period goals by
Brandon Piwko and Elji Hofmann.
The Woodsmen pulled even early in the third period, getting back-to-back goals by Ty Paulios
and Tegan O’Brien just 32 seconds apart to make it a 2-2 game with less than 15 minutes to
play.
Wausau regained the lead on Brady Knutsen’s power-play goal with 4:03 remaining, and Mario
Savino added an insurance tally two minutes later to seal the Cyclones’ second straight win
over the Woodsmen.
Wausau closed out the game with a 37-23 edge in shots on goal, with Woodsmen goalie Lleyton
Jaschke finishing with 34 saves.
The Woodsmen (1-3-0-0) are back in action next weekend, heading to the Miller Buick GMC
Arena in Sauk Rapids for a pair of 7:30 p.m. NA3HL games against the Granite City Lumberjacks.
