TOMAH, Minn. — Thanks to three straight wins — not to mention a 25-1 scoring edge in that
three-game span — the Wisconsin Woodsmen appeared to be clicking on all cylinders entering
Friday’s NA3HL matchup against the Wausau Cyclones.
Unfortunately, the Cyclones decided to throw a monkey wrench in the Woodsmen’s fine-tuned
offensive machine, holding the hosts to a single, second-period goal in dealing Wisconsin a 4-1
setback at the Tomah Ice Center.
The Cyclones took control early, getting back-to-back goals from Maksim Salienko and Eljl
Hofmann three minutes apart early in the first period to take a 2-0 advantage into the locker
room at the first intermission.
The Woodsmen cut the deficit in half on Maxim Lazo’s 16th goal of the season less than five
minutes into the second frame.
Elijah Von Gunten gave the Cyclones a little breathing room with his eighth goal of the season
with 11:23 to play in the third period, and Brandon Piwko tacked on Wausau’s second goal of
the stanza, an empty-net tally with 3:40 to play in regulation, to ice the victory.
Lleyton Jaschke suffered the loss in goal for Wisconsin, stopping 25 of the 28 Wausau shots he
faced, while Cyclones’ goalie Tanner Bonjernoor finished with 27 saves.
The Woodsmen (11-16-2-1 overall) and Cyclones return to the Tomah Ice Center for the second
game of their two-game weekend series on Saturday. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:15 p.m.
