TOMAH, Wis. — For the third time in as many games, the Wisconsin Woodsmen found
themselves in the midst of a one-goal game Friday evening.
And for the second time in those three contests, the Woodsmen came out on top, as
Wisconsin’s Nolan Mix scored his first goal of the season with 3:22 remaining in regulation to
secure a 3-2 NA3HL victory over the Wausau Cyclones at the Tomah Ice Center.
The victory was not only Wisconsin’s first non-overtime contest of the season, but it was also
the Woodsmen’s first-ever against the Cyclones, having dropped all 10 meetings between the
two teams a year ago.
The Woodsmen came out of the gates flying, getting first-period goals by Hugh Deinema and
Joshua Kauppinen to take a quick, 2-0 lead after the game’s opening 20 minutes. With the
goals, Deinema and Kauppinen have now scored in all three of the Woodsmen’s games this
season.
Owen Gohm pulled Wausau within one, 2-1, beating Wisconsin goalie Steven Kelley with 1:44
remaining in the frame, and John Kristz knotted the contest at 2-2 just 3:38 into the final frame
— setting up Mix’s late-game heroics.
Kelley finished with 26 saves in goal for the Woodsmen, who held a 38-29 advantage in shots
on goal.
