MIDWEEK PREVIEW: WOODSMEN vs. GRIZZLIES, CYCLONES

The Wisconsin Woodsmen take to the road for a pair of NA3HL games this weekend. Wisconsin travels to the Rochester (Minn.) Rec Center for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Rochester Grizzlies on Friday, before traveling to Marathon Park in Wausau, Wis., for a 7:10 p.m. showdown with the Wausau Cyclones the following evening.

WOODSMEN SCOUTING REPORT:

  • FOR THE RECORD: The Woodsmen head into their weekend games against the Rochester Grizzlies and Wausau Cyclones sporting a 12-18-2-1 record, good for 27 points and a fifth-place showing in the NA3HL Central Division standings. … Wisconsin closed out the 2024-25 season with a 24-16-6-3 record, good for fifth place in the NA3HL Central Division standings.
  • LAST TIME OUT: The Woodsmen dropped of their NA3HL games last weekend, falling to the West Bend Power 6-2 on the road last Friday, before suffering a 5-2 home setback against the Rochester Grizzlies the following evening..
  • ROAD WARRIORS: The Woodsmen are in the midst of playing five of six games on the road — the lone exception, last Saturday’s matchup against the Rochester Grizzlies. … Wisconsin has collected seven of its 12 wins this season on its home ice, going 7-10-0-1 at the Tomah Ice Center, while owning a 5-8-2-0 mark on the road this year. … The Woodsmen finished 11-8-3-3 at the Tomah Ice Center a year ago, while going 11-8-3-3 on the road.
  • STREAKING: Thanks to their 13-0 win over the Pelham Prowlers, 5-1 victory vs. the Maine Nordiques, and a 7-0 triumph against the Bozeman Nordiques, the Woodsmen have now put together three consecutive wins three times this season. … With their 3-2 win over the Peoria Mustangs on Nov. 7, the Woodsmen put an end to a franchise-high nine-game losing streak.
  • WHITE-KNUCKLE RIDE: The Woodsmen’s 3-2 overtime win over the West Bend Power on Dec. 5 was the ninth game this season decided by one goal. Wisconsin has now played 29 games over the last two seasons that have been decided by one goal — including 16 that went into overtime and four decided in a shootout. … Wisconsin’s 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Moose on Nov. 15 was their first game this season decided by a shootout.
  • TURNING UP THE HEAT: The Woodsmen erupted for a season-high 13 goals in routing the Pelham Power on Dec. 14. The 13 goals were one shy of the single-game franchise record of 14, set in a 14-0 whitewashing of the Minnesota Loons on Jan. 26, 2024. 
  • TURNING UP THE HEAT II: Wisconsin peppered the Peoria Mustangs’ net with 64 shots in its 9-1 win over the Mustangs on Nov. 8. The 64 shots on goal were a season-high, and the most since recording 67 shots against Peoria on Oct. 19, 2024.
  • TURNING UP THE HEAT III: The Woodsmen have scored six or more goals in a game seven times this season, and have netted 6+ goals in a game 17 times over the last two seasons.
  • COMING UP EMPTY: The Woodsmen’s 4-0 loss to the Wausau Cyclones on Oct. 24 marked the first time this season they were held without a goal. The last time Wisconsin, which has scored 80 goals in 26 games, had been shut out came in a 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Moose on Dec. 6, 2025.
  • LIGHTING THE LAMP: Maxim Lazo heads into the weekend leading the Woodsmen in goals with 16, two more than both Ty Paulios and Nolan Mix. Tyler Osborne is the only other Wisconsin player to reach double figures in goals, sitting at 10, while Josh Kauppinen and Parker Holloway are both two goals shy of reaching the 10-goal plateau.
  • SPREADING THE WEALTH:The Woodsmen — whose seven combined goals in its season-opening split against the Rochester Grizzlies on Sept. 12-13 came from seven different players — have had 18 players light the lamp this season.
  • FRANCHISE BEST: Lazo’s four goals in Wisconsin’s 6-4 win over the West Bend Power on Oct. 3 matched his single-game career high, and equaled the franchise single-game record. … Lazo has now scored four goals in a game twice, having also achieved the feat against the Mason City Toros last season. … Nolan Mix originally had set the program record, scoring four goals against the Minnesota Loons on Jan. 26, 2024.
  • TOSSING THE HAT: Paulios’s hat trick against the Rochester Grizzlies on Nov. 22 was his second of the season, having also netted three goals against the Peoria Mustangs on Nov. 7. … Wisconsin has now had a player record three or more goals in a game eight times over the last two seasons. 
  • LENDING A HELPING HAND: Mix is the team-leader in assists with 20. He is one of eight Woodsmen who have eclipsed the 10-assist mark. Paulios is second to Mix with 19 helpers, followed by Lazo with 18, Brandon Slasor with 16, Slasor, Kauppinen and Brodie Mich with 15 each, and Bryce Bechen with 12. … Osborne picked up four assists in the Woodsmen’s 7-0 win over the Bozeman Icedogs on Dec. 16, one shy of the single-game franchise record of five, set by Hunter Nelson against the Minnesota Loons on Jan. 26, 2024.
  • POINT PRODUCERS: Wisconsin boasts six players who have accumulated 20 or more points this season, led by Mix (14 G, 20 A) and Lazo (16 G, 18 A) with 34. Paulios (14 G, 19 A, 33 Pts) has also joined the 30-point club, while Osborne (10 G, 15 A, 25 Pts), Kauppinen (8 G, 15 A, 23 Pts), and Slasor (6 G, 16 A, 22 Pts) have also recorded 20+ points, with Mich (4 G, 15 A, 19 Pts) just one point shy of the 20-point mark.. 
  • BETWEEN THE PIPES: Lleyton Jaschke has appeared in 23 of the Woodsmen’s 34 games in goal (1211:00), compiling a 4.26 goals-against-average and an .885 save percentage. … Jaschke has stopped a team-leading 750 shots. … Alex Rivolta — who picked up his first and second shutouts as a Woodsmen with a six-save effort against the Pelham Prowlers on Dec. 14 and a 27-save showing against the Bozeman Icedogs two days later — boasts a 1.95 GAA and .932 save percentage in eight appearances (400:00), while Logan Blahnik has played in five games (217:00), boating a 5.25 GAA and .850 save % and Aidan Vanderweele owns a 7.60 GAA and .818 save % in three appearances (142:00). … Jaschke closed out the 2024-25 season recording 511 saves in 21 appearances, second to Steven Kelley’s team-leading 738 saves in 25 appearances.
  • PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Woodsmen’s games against the Pelham Prowlers, Maine Nordiques, and Bozeman Icedogs at the NA3HL Showcase on Dec. 14-16 were the first meetings in program history.

GRIZZLIES SCOUTING REPORT:

  • FOR THE RECORD: The Grizzlies head into this weekend’s games against the Wisconsin Woodsmen and West Bend Power owning an 18-12-1-0 record, good for 37 points and a second-place standing in the NA3HL Central Division standings.
  • LAST TIME OUT: Rochester split its two games last week, falling to the league-leading West Bend Power 5-3 on Wednesday, Jan. 7, before rebounding with a 5-2 victory over the Wisconsin Woodsmen last Saturday.
  • HOME SWEET HOME: Rochester’s games at the West Bend Power on Jan. 7 and at the Wisconsin Woodsmen last Saturday are the only road games in the month of January. Rochester plays eight of its 10 January games on its home ice, where the Grizzlies sport an 8-5-1-0 record. The Grizzlies are 10-7-0-0 away from the Rochester Rec Center.
  • ON A ROLL: The Grizzlies head into their showdowns against the Power and Woodsmen having won seven of their last nine games, the lone blemishes a 2-1 loss to the Wausau Cyclones on Dec. 30 and a 5-3 setback at the hands of the Power on Jan. 7.
  • LIGHTING THE LAMP: Mason Decker has been the Grizzlies’ go-to man when it comes to scoring goals, lighting the lamp 27 times through 31 games. Baylor Stebbins is a distant second with 14 goals, three more than both Brett Ludvigsen and Ole Fevold. The quartet are the only Grizzlies with 10 or more goals this season, with Cooper Johnson one goal shy of the 10-goal mark, while Konnor Goclan is two goals away. … Rochester has gotten goals from 18 different players.
  • LENDING A HELPING HAND: Trenton Fore owns a team-best 26 assists, one more than Andrew Bastian and three up on Ludvigsen. Fevold and Goclan have also eclipsed the 20-assist mark, owning 22 and 21 helpers, respectively. Decker (17), Stebbins (14), and Johnson (12) have also reached double figures in assists.
  • POINT PRODUCERS: Thanks to his 27 goals and 17 assists, Decker easily owns the team’s lead in points with 44. Fore (7 G, 26 A) and Ludvigsen (11 G, 22 A) are tied for second with 33 points each, with Bastian (5 G, 25 A, 30 Pts) also owning 30 or more points. Goclan (8 G, 20 A, 28 Pts) and Johnson (9 G, 12 A, 21 Pts) give the Grizzlies eight players with 20 or more points.
  • BETWEEN THE PIPES: Rochester has used five different goalies this season, led by Kyle Lappi and Callum Keating. Lappi has compiled a 2.79 goals-against-average and .894 save percentage in 11 games (622:00) and Keating owns a 3.17 GAA and .864 save % in eight games (453:00). Cameron Patrick (2.08 GAA, .934 save %, 7 GP, 375:00), Nick Kurtiak (3.27 GAA, .856 save %, 4 GP, 238:00), and Tate Metcalf (5.31 GAA, .797 save %, 3 GP, 158:00) have also seen time between the pipes.

CYCLONES SCOUTING REPORT:

  • FOR THE RECORD: The Cyclones enter their weekend owning an 18-12-1-0 record, leaving them tied with the Rochester Grizzlies for second place in the Central Division standings.
  • LAST TIME OUT: Wausau picked up a pair of road wins last weekend, rolling to 7-2 and 4-2 victories over the Peoria Mustangs in Peoria, Ill.
  • HOME SWEET HOME: After playing eight of their last 10 games on the road, the Cyclones Saturday game against the Wisconsin Woodsmen is the first of three straight home games. … Wausau sports a 6-5-0-0 record on its home ice, while going 12-7-1-0 away from Marathon Park.
  • LIGHTING THE LAMP: Jackson Schroeder leads the team in goals with 19. He is one of four Cyclones who have reached double figures in goals this season, being joined by Brady Knutsen (15), Eljl Hofmann (13), and Elijah Gunten (11). Joel Anderson and Jackson Maddock are just two goals shy of joining the quartet in the double-figure goals club. 
  • LENDING A HELPING HAND: Schroeder has collected a team-best 26 assists, with Hofmann and Anderson clipping at his heels with 22 helpers each. Knutsen is fourth on the squad with 19 assists, while Maksim Salienko has also recorded 10+ assists, sitting fifth with 15.
  • POINT PRODUCERS: Schroeder is easily atop the team’s points race with 45 points, thanks to his 19 goals and 26 assists. Hofmann (13 G, 22 A, 35 Pts), Knutsen (15 G, 19 A, 34 Pts), and Anderson (8 G, 22 A, 30 Pts) have also eclipsed the 30-point mark, while Gunten (11 G, 8 A, 19 Pts), Salienko (3 G, 15 A, 18 Pts) are closing in on the 20-point plateau.
  • BETWEEN THE PIPES: The Cyclones have had three different goalies see time between the pipes this season, led by Graedy Falle and Tanner Bonjernoor. Falle has appeared in a team-high 16 games (861:00), compiling a 2.50 goals-against-average and .917 save percentage, while Bonjernoor has played in 13 games (671:00), posting a 3.66 GAA and .888 save %. Brody Kunst has also seen plenty of work in goal for Wausau, playing in seven games (318:00) and owns a 2.64 GAA and .924 save %. … Falle has made a team-leading 432 saves, followed by Bonjernoor (365) and Kunst (184).
